Diamond Segment

What Is Diamond Segment

Diamond segment are the functional parts of a metal-bonded diamond tool. The metal-bonded diamond tool can be a metal-bonded diamond blade, a diamond grinding cup wheel, a diamond core drill bit, a diamond gang saw blade, etc. The diamonds of a metal-bonded diamond tool are all in the tool's diamond segments to play their role of cutting or grinding. Diamond segments consist of small-size diamonds and metal bond materials. The diamonds are mixed with the bond materials, and the mixture is loaded into molds. After hot pressing or cold pressing, sintering, and arc grinding, diamond segments are formed. The metal bond has two basic functions: One is bonding the diamonds to the body of the tool; the other is wearing along with the diamonds' wearing to let the new sharp diamonds be exposed properly.

Summary of the Shape of Diamond Segments

Cube shape or rectangle shape
This kind of diamond segment always be used on Gang saw or marble cutting machine. Gang saw segments are used on the parcel blades, because the blades are straight and push-pull straight cutting , the cutting parts can be mostly exhausted under this shape, meanwhile it is costly to save materials. It also be used for marble cutting , because marble is softer ,and it is easy for opening when cutting , it can meet the requirements for marble cutting.

R-shape , it is also being called fan shape
It looks like a small fan , larger fan shape diamond segments mostly be used on barrel cutting machine. It is easier for arc shape materials. Basically it is normally used on medium cutting blades. Most of R shape are used for marble cutting on medium size blades . some are used for granite cutting ,there is little disadvantages for this type segments. R shape is the most welcomed shape once no special requirements needed.

M shape
This type of segments have a lot of disadvantages on opening . It is more sharp because of the small gap between the teethes , it is mostly used for cutting hard stones , but the cutting life will be shorter because of the sharpness .

K shape
It is normally be used for quarry cutting . the cutting blades will be blocked owing to the poor sharpness ,the K shape segments have good sharpness and long cutting life.

T shape
It is normally being used on Gang saw machine., medium size cutting blades , both are requires good sharpness. The price is higher because of requiring strong impact and wear resistance .

W shape
It is mostly used on corrugated teeth cutting blades, it is required high sharpness and lifespan . such as Artificial micro spar , artificial granite etc.

Why The Diamond Segments Have Been Processed Into Vavious Shape

In daily applications, people like to process diamond segments into different shapes to meet the cutting needs of different stones. As the shape of the diamond segments continues to increase, people find that the different shapes of the diamond segments directly affect the diamond saw blade sawing performance and has an extremely important impact on improving the life and sharpness. It can be said that the shape of the diamond segments not only improve its outlook, but also have a great significance in terms of practicability.

The specific function of the diamond segments is to improve the saw blade chip holding capacity, chip removal capacity, cooling and lubricating effect of diamond segments in the arc cutting area of the saw blade. In addition, it can also reduce the friction effect between segments and stone and sawdust, and improve the rock-breaking ability of diamond particles (as we often say to improve the sharpness),thereby reducing energy consumption (saving power and manpower), improving the performance of the saw blade and so on.

The shape of diamond segments increasing is along with people keep exploring the function of diamond segments, and then work out the solutions. The earliest segments are cuboid, and it is found that there will be serious wear on both sides, but not much wear on the middle part when cuboid segments are used for circular saw blades. After long-term cutting, the segments will become convex in the cross-sectional direction, and the area of the working surface of the segments and the stone will be increased, and the diamond will be easily blunt. Due to the increase of the cutting force, the saw blade substrate is prone to deformation, which shortens the life of the saw blade substrate. Of course, the uneven abrasion of diamond segments will result in the stone with more serious issue of different thickness and uneven cutting surface. Therefore, the design of the diamond segments needs to be more sharper, more reasonable waterway design, and better chip removal function, those become an important reason for the diverse shapes of modern diamond segments.

However, due to the rich variety of stone in the world, different machines and substrates have a great influence on the segments, the specific situation can only be adjusted to the shape of the segments. At present, all segment shapes are independently designed by each manufacturer and there is no unified standard.

Cold Pressing Porcess of Diamond Segments

Batching material, stirring material, cold pressing, molding , sintering , and post-treatment before becoming finished products , and our key point is cold pressing. What is cold processing? some manufacturers designed the cold processing workshop as a conditioning room , but some are not take seriously, so most of cold-processing process are being done under normal condition , specific complete way is to put the agitation of the powder (containing diamond particles and matrix materials), through the way of pressure, pressed powder become block, through such way of cold pressing diamond and matrix can be preliminary unifies in together, forming the shape of the cutting tools, that’s why to say the cold press is an a very critical step in the process of segment.

What kind of machinery will be used for the cold pressing of diamond tool head? Now most of the domestic manufacturers use the automatic cold pressing machine to complete, such a machine is very efficient in processing, only one person is needed to weigh the finished product (this step is very important). Weighing is a very important part during cold pressing , the weight is too big or too small will cause quality problem , it is very important to make sure the quality of segments are stable . the difference of weight are mainly caused by the uneven of diamond and binder, and this is the mainly reason for quality of segments, this must be avoid during manufacturing.

How to ensure the uniformity of powder in the process of cold pressing? It is very important when mixing materials , it is a big problem if not mixing properly during cold processing , there are some other problems except the material, If you choose diamond with poor quality or diamond powder of different sizes, the powder will be uneven.

What Is the Difference Between Diamond Segment and Crushed Pcd Diamond Segment?

If you are looking for a tool to remove epoxy, urethane, paints, glues and other coatings from concrete floors, you may have come across two types of diamond segments: regular diamond segments and crushed PCD diamond segments. What is the difference between them and which one should you choose for your project? In this blog post, we will explain the main features and benefits of each type of segment and help you make an informed decision.

Regular diamond segments are made of synthetic diamonds that are bonded together with metal powders. They are designed to grind and polish concrete surfaces with different levels of hardness and abrasiveness. Regular diamond segments have a smooth and continuous cutting edge that can achieve a high gloss finish on the floor. However, they are not very effective at removing thick and sticky coatings, such as epoxy, urethane, paints and glues. These coatings can clog up the diamond segments and reduce their cutting performance. Moreover, regular diamond segments can generate a lot of heat and friction, which can damage the concrete substrate and cause cracks or burns.

Crushed PCD diamond segments are made of polycrystalline diamonds (PCD) that are crushed into small pieces and embedded into metal matrix. PCD is a synthetic material that has a very high hardness and wear resistance. Crushed PCD diamond segments have a rough and irregular cutting edge that can create a scraping action on the floor. They are specially designed to remove thick and sticky coatings, such as epoxy, urethane, paints and glues. These coatings can be easily scraped off by the crushed PCD segments without clogging or overheating. Moreover, crushed PCD diamond segments can also expose the aggregate of the concrete and create a textured surface that can enhance the bond strength of the new coating.

So, which type of segment should you use for your project? The answer depends on the condition of your floor and the desired outcome. If your floor has a thin or soft coating that can be easily removed by grinding, you can use regular diamond segments to achieve a smooth and shiny finish. If your floor has a thick or hard coating that requires more aggressive removal, you can use crushed PCD diamond segments to create a rough and clean surface. You can also combine both types of segments in different stages of your project to achieve the best results. For example, you can use crushed PCD segments to remove the coating first, then switch to regular diamond segments to polish the floor.
